Noises problem
1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Two Wheel Drive Automatic 100000 miles

I've recently been having some issues with my AC belt. It started to squeak at low idle after 15-20 minutes of driving. A few weeks down the road and it started to squeak louder and within about 2 minutes of driving. The squeaking subsides after I reach, depending on how long I've been driving, a certain RPM. Usually 2000 stops most squeaking but in some cases it doesn't stop until 2500 rpms. I had the belt replaced, and we originally thought a small oil leak was to blame. However even after fixing that oil leak and other minor issues the belt is still making noise. After the original repair was finished the belt noise ceased for a day, than it seemed to start all over again. I'm going in circles and I need some help! What do you guys think?

Hi DJoyce,

Does the belt go around 3 pulleys? If so the smaller pulley is a tensioner pulley and the bearings may be going bad in it. To check, with a can of spray lube and vehicle not running spray the center bolt of the small pulley. Start car and if doesn't squeal then most likely the bearings are going bad. And you will need to replace that pulley.

I remember the previous owner telling me that he had used WD40 to stop the noise, and I thought to myself what an idiot. That just ruins the car even more, you can't lubricate a belt that needs to be tight to work. So I just pushed that thought completely out of my head. But you might be on to something. I'll have my mechanic check out the bearings and see if we can replace them. I know I just replaced all the belts so they should be fine, I just need to replace those bearings. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP I'll reply here if you were right!
