A random misfire along with symptoms like a "putt putt" sound from the tailpipe, severe shaking when idling, and stalling can indicate several potential issues. Here are some common causes you might want to consider:

Ignition System Issues: A random misfire can often be traced back to problems with the ignition system. This includes components like spark plugs, ignition coils, and spark plug wires. Worn or damaged spark plugs can lead to misfires and poor combustion, causing the rough idling and sound you're experiencing.

Fuel System Problems: Issues with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel injector or a failing fuel pump, can lead to poor fuel delivery and combustion. This can result in misfires, rough idling, and even stalling.

Vacuum Leaks: A vacuum leak in the engine can upset the air-fuel mixture and cause misfires, rough idling, and stalling. Inspect the vacuum hoses and connections for any cracks or disconnections.

Air Intake Issues: Problems with the air intake system, like a dirty or faulty mass airflow sensor (MAF), can disrupt the proper air-fuel mixture and lead to misfires and rough idling.

Exhaust System Problems: If there's a restriction or blockage in the exhaust system, it can lead to backpressure issues that affect engine performance and cause the "putt putt" sound. This could be related to a damaged catalytic converter or a blocked muffler.

Engine Compression: Low compression in one or more cylinders can cause misfires. A compression test can help identify if there's an internal engine issue causing the problem.

Engine Control Module (ECM) Issues: In some cases, a malfunctioning ECM might not be managing the engine's performance correctly, leading to misfires and rough idling.

Given the range of potential causes, diagnosing and resolving the issue might require some troubleshooting and testing. Since your scanner is indicating a random misfire, it's a good idea to start by addressing the common culprits: spark plugs, ignition coils, and fuel system components. You might want to consider the following steps:

Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs can cause misfires. Replace them with the correct type and gap as recommended for your Cobalt.

Check Ignition Coils: Test the ignition coils for proper function. If any are found to be faulty, replace them.

Examine the Fuel System: Ensure the fuel injectors are clean and functioning correctly. Check fuel pressure to ensure the fuel pump is working as it should.

Check for Vacuum Leaks: Inspect the vacuum hoses and connections for any leaks or damage. Fix any issues you find.

Evaluate Exhaust System: Have the exhaust system checked for restrictions or damage that could be causing poor exhaust flow.

Have you installed new spark plugs? We had one of these cars in the shop it was doing the same thing and new spark plugs fixed it. check out his guide
