1997 Mercury Villager 1996 Mercury Villager Skips Third Gea

I purchased a 1996 Mercury Villager with a transmission problem.

It shifts from 1st gear to 3rd gear.
It never goes into 2nd gear or overdrive.
I will not shift manually into 2nd gear if you "pull it down."
I need 2nd gear for those steep hills here in TN.

I replaced the TCM and the shifting solenoids on the valve body but still have the same trouble.

I noticed that the previous owner replaced the TPS at some point.


Should I just try a new valve body?

How do I check the transmission codes?

Hi
Really need to have trans scanned for codes that may provide a fault. Suspect 2-4 shift band failure can have band adjusted. Take to trans shop hav ethem check for codes if none have then adjust 2-4 Band.
