1997 Mercury Villager 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic? Miles

thr van started sputtering, jerking, backfiring. Changed fuel filter, my son ran it out of gas, so we thought it was related. We have replaced plugs, wires, air filter, distributer cap, coil, another electronic part in the distributer. I purchased a Car MD an got codes on O senser and cam sensor. We had an exhaust problem and replaced a pipe behind the catalitic converter. The van ran like this for a while, than it started stalling when ideling. I was at a store and it was hard to start and when I tried to put it in gear it stopped. After I got it running I had a hard time driving, real slow, sputtering, jerking, backfiring. When I got to my mom's home I unloaded groceries and tried to go home. The car died at the driveway and the road. I called my son to come get me. We had to push the van into a parking lot and left it. Now the van will run for a short time and will not start or run until it sits for about 2 hours. Any Ideas? The van belongs to my Mother & Brother, both are on a fixed income, as I am also. I drive them because they cannot drive now.

The car md, is correct. The cam controls fuel and once it gets to operating temp it will shut down and also cause the other driveability problems you are having. The oxygen sensor(o2) tells the computer when it is warmed up. If it can never tell the computer when it is warmed up, then it will never be able to operate correctly.
