Electrical problem
1999 Mercury Tracer 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

i'm having an issue with brake lights and when checking the wiring to the 2 brake switches (shifter lockout, brake lights) it seems that the 2 wires that are hot are also showing continuity to ground when the battery is disconnected. I am puzzled by this situation. I'm told that one day the brake lights went out and the fuse was replaced and burned out almost immediately. The emergency flashers and turn signals work fine. I've downloaded wiring schematics and theres an issue with a particular wire that goes somewhere other than where it is indicated in the diagram. I really hope someone can give me a clue as to what might be wrong.

I cant find anything about a specific isssue with the wiring in your vehicle. It does look like all the rear lights go through an electronic flasher (behind left side of dash) If it has shorted it can do what you describe. First inspect all plugs to be sure none are melted or the cause of the short to ground
