Hello from Alaska
a pals car broke down. 1990 merc topaz odometer has stopped at 12300 miles. I believe it is a 4 cylinder but not sure as it is dark and cold out (sorry didn't pay attention.
Problem: I arrived to look at the car. Started the car drove it and it seemed to work ok. Parked it, then put it into reverse. It didn't go. I turned car off for approx 5 min. Restarted and drove it up to approx 25 mph in parking lot. Its icy out (temp 35F) so I didn't go much faster. I backed the car into a space. Put it into park. Within 30 seconds tried to put into drive. Nothing. No noise. No movement of any kind. Engine seems to be running ok. No strange noises there. Fluid in on transmission dip stick doesn't seem burnt or burnt smelling. Any ideas would be helpful
thanks

Got OBD2 code/s-meaning check engine light On or has flashed. If so have it read over at autozone for free and report back with it.

Have the transmission range sensor and vehicle speed sensor's check.

The check engine light does not come on. Nor do we have autozone in Alaska. The owner of car managed to get it almost home about 6 miles. Car started smoking. She called Me. I went and started car. It went into gear. Drove for a block then car stopped again. I turned off car. Started it again and it went another 2 blocks to a parking area where I left it.
Thanks for previous info. I will get a garage to tow it I guess. This is out of My knowlege range

In case you are interested it was the filter in the transmission. Apparently it was pretty well clogged. The mech at the shop said there were bits of metal and to figure on getting rid of the car soon.
Any comment on that?
All the best
