Speedometer wobbles

I have a 1994 mercury sable with a 3.0 and about 50,000 miles and the speedometer is iratic after I go over 40mph. It actually bounces up and down off of the dash where the speedometer is at 85mph when I am going any speed over 40 or so. It also makes a grinding/fast ticking noise behind the dash. What do I need to do to repair this issue and how is it done?

What it is is the inner cable. You have to reach up and unscrew the cable from the speedometer pull out the old cable and put in a new one.

I'd try lubing the cable first.

These cables are like brake cables on a bicycle. Sometimes the inside begins to rust.

The good news is that you can prevent further damage by lubing the cable as soon as the wobble is noticed by the shaky speed needle. No new cable needs to be installed.

The bad news is that if you let this wobbling go on until noise appared and then became unbearable, the inside of the cable is most certainly gone the way of the dodo. Get new cable pronto.

Oh, I know. But these pages keep getting read on, right?
So why not expand on them a bit?

I think I'Ã Â l try those without answers. Some of them are pretty good questions and no one bothered to reply.

Good idea! Usually if the poster doesn't ask a follow up, his problem is solved.
