I took my 1996 Mercury Sable with 87k in for an alignment because it was shaking badly at most speeds and pulling to the right. I was told that I will need to replace the ball joints soon. How critical is this and what is involved? I would like to know so that I can get a quote from another mechanic for comparison. Thank you

VERY critical, if it seperates while you are driving, you will loose control, the wheel will kick outward and maybe tear off the car! The knucle should be removed, the old joint pressed out, the new one in and then reassembled. Then the alignment!
