Gas gauge problem

I have 1 1995 Mercury Sable 289,000 km. The gas gauge is pegged above the full mark and does not work as well the overhead map lights stopped working but not the dome light. I suspect a short circuit somewhere any help on where to check would be great. Also the car will not start from the key but will start from the remote car starter.

First pull the fuse to the remote starter and check for start. If this was installed incorrectly, it can cause anything from melted, burned wires, to ruining the PCM!
