2003 Mercury Sable wont go in any gear

My wife was driving my car and then she said that the engine would just rev and it would not go in any gaer she tried. There has been no previous indications that my tranny was going but like slipage and hesitation when driving in the past. What might it be?

Might be time to rebuild the tranny, but check fluid level and color with warm engine and on level ground.
Also, if check engine light is on, scan the codes even if you have to buy a code reader, they are cheap enough and work on all cars between 96-present. Post all codes found.
