2003 Mercury Sable car running hot and steam from back of e

My mom was going to work today and noticed the heater stopped working, then she noticed that all her gauges were up very hot so she pulled over and popped the hood. Upon expection she saw steam coming from the back of the engine. What could be wrong?

Ok this probably happened because the coolant was very low, the steam could be a busted heater hose or a blown head gasket, , You have to have someone inspect it to see if it is driveable, also you can make sure the coolant is full. Very very important, you will ruin the entire engine because of running it on low coolant
