I have 1999 Mercury Sable with 63,000 miles on it, last year it started to do a "neutralizing" thing mostly between 1st and 2nd gear shifting (mostly on take off). The RPM's rev between gears and car does not go forward. I let off the gas let RPM come down and press gas again and it usually goes fine then. Of the people I have talked to, they say to replace the transmission, or it may be a bad piston.

Any other suggestions, this has been a good car, but I don't know if I want to spend over 2,000 to put a new transmission in and it doesn't fix the problem! Thanks for your help!

Bad piston? Replace the trans? To me it sounds like you have a bad shift solenoid. There are two. One is for the 1-2 shift the other for the 3-4 shift. Have that checked. It isn't an expensive part and the total shouldn't be more tha 150.00. Please realize I don't know where you live so the price may be more or less. A good trans tech could tell you in one test drive.

Let me know what you find. Also, let me know if the check engine light has been on.
