1998 Mercury Sable tacometer increase and decrease

While driving and at idleing the engine wants to speed up and then slow down, intermittent, no particular time or weather related, sometimes if I gun it it will stop. Changed throttle position sensor and egr and pvc hose last year. Engine lite is on but was on before problem started. Tanks

Ok first off I would like you to call around to your local parts store and find one that will do a free scan and scan you car get the codes and write them down then have them clear the codes too ok. Get back to me with the codes and lets see what the car is trying to tell us, and go from there.
