1993 Mercury Sable I'm not for sure what the problem is

Until today I have had no problem with my car (not this problem atleast). The engine died while pulling into walmart. We tried to restart it and for awhile it wouldn't (then it turned). While the motor wouldn't turn the battery and pil lights were on (I don't know if that has anything to do with anything). It stalled again in under 20 feet. Then after awhile we tried it again (my uncle was pulling us) After a little while the chain came off-and it got us the rest of the way home.

MY uncle thinks it may be the fuel filter/puimp-what do you all think it is?

A fuel filter wount go bad all at once unless you got some bad fuel. It could be a bad fuel pump, but I would get the fuel pressure at the engine checked first. One easy check you can do yourself is have one person put ear to the fuel filler neck with cap off and listen while another person turns the key from off to run, not start. You should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds.
