I have a Mercury Monterey 2004, Approx. 64,500 miles. V6 engine.

I have been hearing a rubbing sound like, rubber squeaking together when I break and from time to time while breaking I hear a loud cracking sound. I took it in to Les Schwab to see what was wrong with my breaks, they inspected it and said my breaks are fine. I wasn't happy with that answer, so another guy there took the van for a test drive and said it is the Struts. I looked up struts online to see what the sign of a bad strut is, those noises I'm hearing is not the struts. They want $609.00 for the work. Can it be the calipers? Need help!

Do you have rear disc or drum brakes?

Can you decifer weather is is the front or rear?

Does it seem to happen only during damp weather, first thing it the morning?

When you took it to Les Schwab, they verified the brakes are safe, but perhaps that is still where noise originates. I doubt calipers. Possibly lack of lubrication on the slides surfaces. The cracking is the part that is a bigger concern.

Noises are tough over the net. IS there a chance that you have a digital camera that can record a short movie 5-15 sec. Where you can record it while someone else drives?

I'm going to try and rec. The noise while my van is in the garage. If I pump the breaks while stopped and the car off it makes that noise, too. I don't know what kind of breaks I have, there are pads in the front. The noise comes no matter what kind of weather, but the loud cracking/pop noise comes more when it's colder or damp outside.

I recorded it but cannot figure out how to send it. It actually sounds like a door creaking, you know the ones in the scary movies. It allows me to pump the breaks 3 times after I'm stopped and car is off then I cant move the brake foot pad anymore. I never know when the crack sound is coming, it just appears out of nowhere, and when I break and just as I come to a complete stop. Hope that helps.
