1989 Mercury Marguis, 104,000 miles 5.0L engine

Car has been well maintained.

After cruising on at 55-65 mph, upon decelerating, the yellow 'check engine' light flashes briefly. No other incidents observed.

I assume that a computer code check will reveal exact problem, but what is most likely cause(s)?

Generally a flashing check engine light is a sign of damage being caused to the converter. The codes will aid in finding the source of the problem, but it is a starting point with which to work with. Post the codes and we can go from there.
