1994 Mercury Sable

I have a 1994 mercury sable and it runs but will not go into drive. The engine sounds great and the computer tester said the car passed all tests. It is a v6 engine with an AXOD transmission with the mileage at 143,039 miles. Do I need a new transmission or could it be something simpilar?

In case it is a stuck shifter for a shifter below on the console:
brute force, temporary method:
remove console cover,
if trying to get it out of park, press shifter button while
using wrench to press little metal rod
(which moves when pressing shifter button)
(on passenger side of shifter, below shifter ****)
otherwise, with cover off, see what is preventing shifter
from moving if that is the problem
