If the timing belt slips will it bend the valves?

My manual says yes, it is an interference engine, but there are footnotes from other techs and a Ford tech that state they havent seen one bend the valves.That doesnt mean it cant happen, alot of the time it has to do with engine speed (rpm) when the belt lets go.I would do the scheduled maintenance on it, and not press my luck.If it does happen to hit internally it can get very expensive
