Hello. My Mercury is pushing 197,000 miles, and while driving on the highway, it suddenly died. I tried pressing the gas pedal, but nothing happened. Yet after a minute of sitting, I tried running it again and it worked. Do you know what could have happened? Is it time to put the car to pasture or is it worth fixing?

It sounds like maybe the fuel pump is going out. Try running a fuel pressure test on it. You should get a reading anywhere between 35 and 60 psi of pressure. If not, I would recommend replacing the fuel pump.
