Transmission fliud and repair

1999 Cougar with V6 and 125K miles. When cold, transmission shifts thru all gears, no noises. After approx. Five or so miles it heats up and won't stay in gear with a grinding noise. If you let cool off for approx. 15 minutes it will go in gear again till it heats up again. Is there a special tranny fluid for this car? Is tranny gone? Help!

Have you checked the cooler? How about the color and level of the tranny fluid? Yes your tranny should have Mercon 5 fluid.

Tranny fluid was a little low, less than qt. But does kind of smell burnt. Where is cooler?
