'Cracking' sound in reverse backing out driveway coming from front wheel area.

If its Tierods/Tierod ends ?, how should this be verified and how much does it typically cost to replace these items.
Does it make sense to have bad tierods for this mileage amount.
Is it dangerous (safety item) ?
