I JUST BOUGHT A USED 2000 MERCURY COUGAR FROM A GUY THAT HAD VERY LITTLE INFO ON THE CAR & NO PAPERWORK OR OWNERS MANUAL & HE ONLY HAD 1 KEY FOR THE CAR. CAR HAS POWER DOOR LOCKS AND WHEN I GOT HOME AS SOON AS I TOOK THE KEY OUT OF IGNITION I SAW A LITTLE RED LIGHT BLINKING ON THE DASH. WENT ONLINE DOWNLOADED OWNERS MANUAL. FOUND OUT IT;S NOT AN ALARM SYSTEM IT'S CALLED PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) AN ENGINE IMMOBILIZATION SYSTEM THAT PREVENTS THE ENGINE FROM STARTING UNLESS A CODED KEY IS USED. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS, WAS THE CAR BUILT WITH A REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN TELL IF IT DID OR NOT, SOMETHING TO LOOK FOR? I SENT E-MAILS WITH VIN # TO FORD MERCURY & TO A INTERNET SITE THAT SELLS REMOTES FOR 2000 COUGARS 2x TO BOTH AND I'VE GOTTEN NO REPLY;S FROM EITHER COMPANY. SO IF THERE'S A WAY I CAN CHECK MYSELF I SURE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. THANKS FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN GIVE ME

Hello
Thanks for the donation.

The red light that flashes is indeed the anti-theft system. The key has a built in chip called the "PATS" chip. This is a secondary system which prevents the starting of the vehicle if the chip is not programmed to the computer or if the key does not have the chip inside of it. I too own a 2000 Cougar. They do come equipped with both anti-theft systems as standard equipment. You should have received keyless entry remote with the car. The light is supposed to flash when key is out, by the way.

Thanks for using 2CarPros. Com!
