2000 Mercury Cougar bucks

I have a 2000 mercury cougar. I will be driving it for maybe fifteen mins then all of a sudden it will jump to over 3000 rpms and then drop back down to 2500 but that only happens when i'm going about 50 mph or higher. Also it won't do it if I turn my overdrive off. I have an automatic transmission. Can anyone help me figure out what could possibly be the problem?

Has the fluid ever been changed? Go to a tranny shop, have them use the pump machine to pump new fluid in while it pumps the old fluid out, this will wash the inside of the tranny as it changes the fluid, somthing is sticking.
