Hello, here's the problem I'm dealing with. I've recently noticed that my 97 Cougar idle speed has hunted between 900-1500 RPM on serveral occasions. One time I noticed that while the car was parked with the A/C on, RPM's got up to 1500. Shut the AC off, no effect. I've changed the fuel filter, and cleaned out the IAC valve. Also wiped off the butterfly valve (inside/outside and edges) at the entrance to the throttle body (think that's what its called). Any ideas on what could be causing this? Haven't noticed it again since doing all the above work. Just want to be ready in case the problem persists. Is there an idle speed adjustment on this engine? 4.6L Car runs fine and no check engine lights lit. Thanks for your help.

You have actually answered your own concern by cleaning the IAC valve. There is no idle or timing adjustment available for your 4.6L.

Zackman, if the idle speed does continue to be un- steady (hunting/steady 1500 RPM) what would be the next course of action?

Try unplugging the IAC valve. If you notice a drop in your idle, your IAC is fine. Then you should concentrate on checking ALL you vacuum lines and possibly intake gasket. You have a vacuum leak somewhere. Also check around your EGR valve and DPFE solenoid for leak as well.
