Hi

My wife's A140 has developed a problem with the ECU and the Merc garage wants  £1200 to replace it.

My question, for which I would be very grateful for help with, is whether the ECM can be repaired or whether it has to be replaced. If it can be repaired, any pointers as to how this is done would be very helpful.

Thanks

Anthony

Unfortunately a failed control unit is not repairable only replacable. Often times these are failed due to circuitry, hardware and even software issues that can only be delt with on an engineering level.

Thanks for your help with this. At least knowing that the unit has to be replaced rather than repaired has re-assured me that I was not being told to do it just for the sake of it.

Is it possible to buy the ECMs privately and to have them installed by a Mercedes trained specialist?

Many thanks

Anthony

Usually you can only purchase ECM's via a MB dealer mainly because of the coding involved to mate the computer with the vehicle. This is not a plug and play module but rather must be programed by a tech to the specifications of your vehicle. If you do find one through a private party be very careful as these are very sensitive compnents that can be made fully unusable by something a simple as static electricity. These modules come packaged to prevent any electrical discharge on the unit and if handled improperly will become nothing more than a $1000 paperweight. My professional recommnedation, have this done at a MB dealer with new MB parts. This will ensure no other issues arrive due to a miscoded or mishandled unit.
