1986 Mercedes Benz 560sel transmission problem

The car will operate in reverse but in drive it just acts as if it is in neutral. I thought maybe the fluid was out or low. Is the transmission shot? If not, where do I put the fluid in. The manual is gone.

There is a dipstick or a fluid indicator in there somewhere, you need to look at the transmission at the top from under the hood. Somewhere you will find a tube that comes up from it and there wil be a handle of a sort to pull out at the top of the tube to indicate the level and how clean it is. IT should be a transluscent pink color.
