After engine warms up engine misses badly at low (under 750-850) RPM. At speed car runs beautifully with good power and acceleration.

Mechanic tells me coil is putting very high voltage(?) Because plug wires and distributer cap/rotor causing too much resistance. I have had this car from 138,000 miles to now 251000 miles and have never changed plug wires.

Does this sound like an accurate diagnosis?

It is possible, electrical items normally develop more resistance as they heat up.

And if you haven't changed the plug wire for that long, then you're due.

You might also want to replace any other tune up parts that haven't been changed in the last 50,000 miles.
