My neighbor has the above described car, but not the internet. He has recently changed out the motor, and is having a problem with, what we feel, is the timing.

The engine # is 117 231hp

He has replaced the timing chain, replaced the hog gear and replaced both cams and gears (2 overhead cams).

Car has difficulty starting, and when running, backfires every 1-2 seconds.

The distributor gear has a little play between the gear and housing, the roll pinion gear appears OK.

Ideas? Jim

Ok what have you checked so far? Have you checked the timing and have you double checked the firing order? Let me know what you can and we will take it from there.

Our last contact was 5-31-09. At that time, I answered your followup question indicating that I would check with the owner and be back to you.

Since that time, the owner, who doesn't have the internet, has bought another engine and now the problem is:

Why is gas filling up and dripping our of the air rails? We are getting plenty of spark from the main lead to the distributor, but even cranking for 30-45 seconds, we don't even get a backfire.
