My 1991 Mazda Miata runs strong and performs well. There are no apparent problems. However the "air bag" light flashes intermitently five times, repeatedly.
To stop this flashing I disconnected the negative cable from the battery for two minutes according to my repair manual. This stops the problem for a brief period of time. Any idea what is causing the flashing?

Please advise

Hello,

Whenever there is a fault detected within the air bag system the light gets illuminated. It could be due a bad crush sensor or issue with the airbag module. It can also be due to a bad clock spring.
The clock spring goes in between the airbag in the steering wheel and the steering column. It keeps constant connection between the airbag and the power, to work with the turning of the steering wheel.
If the clock spring is not keeping contact as its designed to the air bag light will be illuminated.

Here is a helpful article on clock spring:

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
