Electrical problem
1998 Mazda 626 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

How do I replace the alternator on my daughter's 98 626. I see the top mounting bolt and belt tensioning adjustment bolt. Is there one under the bottom and how do I get to it?

Yes there is a bolt running through the bottom of the alternator holding it to the mounting bracket. You should be able to access it with a 6' extension and either a 13 or 15 mm socket. Note, be sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before you start the work. Also, with disconnecting the battery, you may lose radio memory, so if it needs a reset code. Be sure you have it.

Do I remove the right front wheel and perhaps a shroud (splash guard) or just get the car up on jack stands and go at it from the bottom?

Jack stands may do the trick. Just be sure it's secure. You still may have to remove the splash guard.
