Does it go to HOT when the key is turned on, or does it get HOT after running for a few minutes. I would check to see if the engine cooling fan is working. If it is then you might have some cyl. Head or head gasket issues. IF it is going to HOT with just the key turned on. Then I would suspect a coolant tempature sensor or wiring to that sensor

I own a 1990 Mazda 323, manual/petrol/1293cc/5gear transmition.

Last week I had to drive through 6" of water for about 6 miles. I had to leave engine revved up (3500) not to let engine stall.
After two days of normal running engine overspeeded to about 4500. I tried to chack accellerator pedal but to no avail. I switched off ignition but engine continued to rev erratically. Finally I had to stop engine on gear. When engine starts from cold it stops normally, as soon as it warms up a little the fault comes up again and engine overrevvs and does not stop.

What can I do? :D :D
