My car did not pass the smog test in California. It has a 2 year old catalytic converter and Oxygen sensor. My local garage suspects the air flow sensor to be misfunctioning. How would I know that true? What's the cheapest way to fix it?

You must have a scope to view what the sensor is sending to the computer to verify the sensor--and even then, you could have a wiring problem. This makes car repair difficult--there is no magic tool that will show you what to fix. Most times, you can't be sure until you actually replace the component. I have been able to fix one of these through bending a tang inside, but I doubt the shop will want to take on that liability. You are probably looking at a new one--it would be nice if the shop could test with known good used. Good luck
