I'm trying to convert my transmission to an automatic. I have a whole donor Vibe that's a 04 fwd. The whole wiring harness/system is completely different, ECM, having to change the steering column. My question is why? The only difference between them (other than trans) is the year and the auto has cruse control and the manual doesn't.

Converting a transmission from manual to automatic is a complex task that involves more than just swapping the transmission itself. The differences between a manual and automatic transmission go beyond the transmission unit. They include components such as the clutch system, flywheel, pedal assembly, shift linkage, and even the engine control module (ECM) programming.

Here are a few reasons why a manual-to-automatic transmission conversion can be challenging:

Wiring and ECM: Automatic transmissions require specific wiring harnesses and control modules to operate properly. These components are often different from those used in manual transmissions. In your case, the donor Vibe's wiring harness and ECM are likely designed for an automatic transmission, and they may not be compatible with your manual transmission configuration.

Transmission Mounting: The mounting points for manual and automatic transmissions are often different. Adapting the transmission mounting to fit the automatic transmission can require fabrication work, such as modifying or fabricating transmission crossmembers or brackets.

Shifter and Linkage: Manual and automatic transmissions have different shifters and linkage mechanisms. Converting from manual to automatic would require modifying or replacing the shifter assembly and creating a new linkage system that can properly engage the automatic transmission's gear positions.

Pedals and Steering Column: Since you mentioned changing the steering column, it suggests that the manual and automatic versions of your vehicle may have different pedal assemblies. This means you would need to swap out the brake, clutch, and throttle pedals to accommodate the automatic transmission. Additionally, the steering column might require modification or replacement to incorporate the necessary controls for an automatic transmission, such as the gear selector.

ECM and Programming: The ECM or engine control module is responsible for managing the engine's operation, including its interaction with the transmission. Automatic transmissions often require different ECM programming and additional sensors to function correctly. Retrofitting the ECM and programming it to work with an automatic transmission can be challenging and may require specialized tools and knowledge.

Considering these factors, converting a transmission from manual to automatic involves significant mechanical modifications, electrical rewiring, and potentially reprogramming the ECM. It's a complex and time-consuming process that requires expertise and resources.
