I bought this saturn from a good friends of mine who took good care of it. They did inform me of some minor maintenance that needs to be done. They also informed me about the front brakes being done about a year ago. Used the brakes to stop, it wont decently. I have to slow down and/or pump the brakes before I stop. I do not know if it is air in the lines or not properly bled correctly.

If you have drum brakes in the rear which most likely you do your rear brakes they are probably out of adjustment. Also make sure your rear wheel cylinder are not leaking. Those cars are very dependent on having their rear brakes adjusted correctly for a nice pedal and stopping in general. At the Saturn dealership we used to adjust the rear brakes when they came in for service every 12,000 miles.

I would also look at the front to make sure there not worn out. But that shouldn't effect the pedal height and stopping if the fronts were totally worn out you would here them.
