2000 Lexus RX 300 gas tank door

When I pull on the lever to open the gas tank door it will not open. The lever and cable work fine yet the door does not swing open to clear the plastic tab. It takes two people, one to pull the lever and another to pull on the gas tank door. Seems there should be a spring or something that allows the door to swing free of the tab. Is there a spring broken on the door?

Yes there is a small spring (which is simply a bent piece of flexible metal that is attached to the inside of the door. It is simply glued on. Mine came off too but luckily stayed where I could find it. I simply glued it back on with epoxy. You could probably fashion something that will pop the door when the lever is pulled.
