I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler with 91,000 miles. When it is hot out, it will drop RPM's rapidly and "sputter" as it it wants to stall. It happened to a lesser extent last summer and then was fine all winter. This summer it has gotten worse. It has stalled out a few times due to this, once on the highway while I was doing 65. I pull over and it re-starts no problem and I can drive away right then. When the happens, the RPM's drop to 0 then kick back in after a sputter. The electrical in the car is still on and I have to turn the car completely off and restart it.

Also sometimes when I fill up, the gas pumps kicks back saying I am full but when I re-start the car it shows 3/4 tank. Not sure if this is related but I figured I might as well bring it up as it might be key to someone in the know.

I am not a car guy, hence I am asking the question here. But to me it seems that the fuel pump is either overheating or a relay switch somewhere is burning out. Like I said it only seems to happen when the weather turns especially hot. Usually after I have been driving for 45 minutes or so.

Is teh check engine light on? If it is go to your local parts store or find one that will do a free scan and scan it and get back to me with the codes.

Ok the only way to find out if it is the fuel pump is to check the fuel pressure while it messing up to see if the fuel pressure is dropping off. If you can't do this yourself then you should find a shop that is willing to run a fuel pressure test while running to see what it does when it starts to stall out. It should stay between 44 to 54 psi.

Took it in to Midas. After 2 days of testing looks like it was an crank position sensor. They said it was very common in Chrysler models. $300.00 out the door.
