Ok I am probably not going to like the answers I get but here is the lowdown on my 1999 WJ 6 cyl, 42RE Tranny.

Got an engine code today on the way back to work after driving a few miles to my home for lunch

The light wasn't on this AM on the way to work, nor was it on last night when I shut it down for the evening.

The code: P0783 - 3-4 Shift Sol / No RPM Drop at Lockup

My understanding is the OD solenoid doesn't engage and help the OD come on, therefore helping with fuel economy, etc. Correct me if I am off base though!

Factors and history:

* Cold tranny doesn't smoothly shift into 3rd gear normally. Warm, shifts just fine. Was told that this could be a clutch pack issue.

* Used the Full time 4WD for the first time in the snow last night

* Light appeared shortly after going through massive amounts of flooding water on the roads.

What is the culprit?

a) The OD solenoid

b) The clutch which is now shot b/c I HAD to use the 4 x 4. Therefore straining an already malfunctioning tranny

c) The Water impacting the solenoid, causing it to temporarily malfunction

Yeah I know I am clutching at straws with the last one, but I am desperate to NOT spend huge bucks.

Funny thing is? It seems to run and shift just fine. Is this something I should be able to feel?

Could this be temporary and the code gets flushed after a few cycles?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Actually, the code got kicked on Friday evening as whatever was throwing the code ceased to be interpreted as a failure. So, no more Check Engine light for me.

My guess is that something got doused going through that huge puddle of water and didn't like it.

I still have to deal with my 2nd to 3rd gear clutch pack seal issue though I bet. ;-)

ON EDIT - The light is back. Now I have to assuem it is an intermittent problem.
