Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Other Jeep Models 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 0

How do I set the valve and crank timeing on a 1998 Jeep Grand chreoke 4.0 L / 6cyl. Once I have done that how do I set up the distributer.

I rebuilt the engine and m starting from scratch.
The book tells me to line up the timeing marks rotate the engine until the cam gear mark is at 1 oclock and the crank sproket is at 3 oclock. Count the number of chain pins and there should be fifteen.
No mater how I try I cant get the fifteen pins and line up the marks.
Please hel me sort through this.

You will need to rotate the engine, not just move it a little, and when your marks are close, then count the pins. To do the distributor, put the engine at top dead center on the compression stroke, look at your cap and see where #1 plug wire is located, and put the distributor in with the rotor facing #1wire. That will get you close enough to start it, and you can turn the dist.(Don't tighten it so tight that it wont turn with some force)as you are cranking it in either direction until it runs.
