is there a way to check an engine light code with out buying anything or taking it in?

Yes, local auto part stores such as AutoZone, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Advance Auto Parts (to name a few) will all run a diagnostic scanner on your vehicle for free. This test will only work while the engine light is illuminated though.
