My wife noticed last week that her car seemed to be having problems with its auto transmission, and last night her check engine light came on (which is when I of course first heard about the problem). I get the following code of P 1756, which apparently means this: GOV Press Not Equal To Target @ 15-20 PSI. What does this mean, and how much can I expect to pay to have this repaired? I can do basic car maintenance (oil, spark plug, etc.) But I don’t feel comfortable with transmission problems. Also, can we drive the car with this type of problem?

I see that according to my books, you're right on the money with what your error code means. I dug around a bit - no info that can be helpful. Can you be more specific with "having problems w/ auto tranny"? Forward, backwards? Other than asking about fluid level and fluid filter change, I can't recommend much - Trannys are controlled by the engine computer and internal solenoid valves do too much for us DIY'S to be able to pull off the backyard fix that we used to able to. You CAN pull off the fluid/filter change if you have patience and a couple of hours - lots of bolts to tweak and tighten, plus getting the damn gasket on and lined up - good luck!
