Electrical problem
1999 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

The last time I started my 99 cherokee sport with the inline 6, it started just fine. It did take just a fraction of a second longer to turn over. But I gave no thought. Couple hours later I let a friend drive, he does not hold the key in start until it starts. Now all I get is a slight hissing when I turn the key. HELP!

Hi Ares8942,

Thank you for the donation.

Symptoms seems to indicate a faulty styarter motor.

Disconnect the starter motor solenoid wire and attach a remote wire to it. Apply battery voltage and if engine does not crank, the starter is bad.

By the way. Check the battery condition first. Ensure voltage is at least 12 volts and with ignition switch turned to crank, it should be at least 11 volts.

Had it hooked up to another vehicle and it still didn't wannt turn. Just clicked makes no more noise. Guess its time for a new starter motor?

Give the starter some tapping with a mallet or hammer and retest. If it cranks, then yes, time to get a new starter.

Did you try using a remote wire to apply battery voltage to the solenoid? This test would eliminate the possibility of wiring faults being the cause.
