1997 Jeep Cherokee won't turn over

1997 Jeep Cherokee Four Wheel Drive Automatic

won't turn over when in park but sometimes will start when put into nuetral or by backing the car up a little then trying it again.

What causes this?

Will it attempt to crank in park? Or only in neutral.

When in park its like theres a kill switch on the engine?

Sometimes it sounds like it trying to start but other times it sounds like a weezing noise and does nothing while it's in park.

I've noticed also that when in neutral the engine will bang like a firecraker when I press on the gas a little more in an attempt to get it started.

So no cranking in parking? Or it trys to crank but not turn over when in park.
