1988 Jeep Cherokee tilt steering

In the 3 years I've owned it, the"tilt" part on the column has seemed to gradually loosen to the point of 2" of play side to side or up and down on the wheel, and thats without using the lever for the tilt. A little concerning.

It may be the tilt switch, but if the steering wheel will lock into place, even with play, then it is probably not the switch.

It sounds like you have bolts that have come loose inside the steering column, causing the play in the wheel. You would have to remove the steering wheel and disassemble the steering column to fix this issue.
