I'm just curious right now. What's the best to make it a posi on a budget? What are you guys recommend? I think it's a 14-bolt, I have to get under it and count.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

The term positraction was created by GM to indicate a limited slip differential. No differential today is a true posi, which would mean both wheels have equal power and turn the exact same speed all the time.

Your vehicle has what is called an open differential. Spider gears allow the wheels (left and right) to turn at different speeds. Thus, when making turns you don't rip the tires apart. Also, an open differential as you have will apply power to the wheel with least resistance. In the past, people would weld spider gears together to prevent the differential speeds for each wheel, but that is not something you could drive on the road all the time without breaking things or replacing rear tires constantly. Also, it really is unsafe.

What you really need to get is a different differential. I would suggest finding a limited slip (which means the same as posi) differential from a salvage yard and replacing what you have. There isn't a way I would suggest trying to make your open standard type diff a posi.

Remember, the old lockers were a true posi. However, the term differential really relates to the concept that each wheel can turn at different speeds (hence the word differential).

I hope this helps explain.

Take care and let me know if you have other questions.

Joe
