So, as you can see I have the car listed above. Great car. Looks beautiful, clean. However one morning I go outside to crank it, and nothing. Not even lights would come on. I got it to the Pontiac dealership and it they said it was the computer. They replaced it and I picked my car up and when I did it was spitting and sputtering and wouldn’t go over 15-30 MPH. It idles just fine. It’s when you press the gas that it wants to sputter. My husband ran a diagnostic and codes P0315 and p0405 came up. For P0315 we replaced the crankshaft sensor. Still didn’t erase the code. The check engine light is on and “service stabiltrak” and something with traction control are light up on the dash.

Hi,

Did you notify the dealership of the issue? Which computer was replaced? As far as the StabiliTrak, that could be a simple wheel speed sensor, low brake fluid, and so on. I don't see why it would cause the symptoms you described.

The P0405 is related to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. That could cause issues. In this case, it deals with a low voltage. Several things can cause that, but the first thing I want you to check is the connector at the EGR. Since the vehicle was just worked on, something may have been disconnected or not properly connected.

I attached a pic below showing the EGR. I highlighted where the connector is located. Check for damage, make sure it's tight, and make sure it isn't corroded.

Let me know.
Joe

Yes! My husband replaced the EGR. The EGR code went away. It’s still spitting and sputtering. Yes, I contacted the dealer. They won’t even look at it now. I took it to a shop, they checked the MAF, throttle body, etc. They said the computer is fine, and the engine supposedly is fine.

Okay, then we have to look closely at the P0315.

DTC P0315
Crankshaft Position (CKP) System Variation Not Learned

This could be the issue, but usually, it doesn't cause what you are experiencing.

Here are the directions for the relearn procedure. It will require a scan tool. However, I'm surprised that a dealer didn't do this already since the code was stored.

Vehicle Testing and Inspection Programming and Relearning Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN

IMPORTANT:
- The Crankshaft Position (CKP) system variation learn procedure is also required when the following service procedures have been performed, regardless of whether DTC P0315 is set:
- An engine replacement
- A engine control module (ECM) replacement
- A crankshaft balancer replacement
- A crankshaft replacement
- A CKP sensor replacement
- Any engine repairs which disturb the crankshaft to CKP sensor relationship.
- The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure. The scan tool monitors the following components:
- CKP sensors activity-If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
- Camshaft position (CMP) signal activity-If there is a CMP signal condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set.
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT)-If the engine coolant temperature is not warm enough, idle the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches the correct temperature.

1. Install a scan tool.
2. Monitor the ECM for DTCs with a scan tool. If other DTCs are set, except DTC P0315, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle for the applicable DTC that set.
With a scan tool, select the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure and perform the following:
1. Observe fuel cut-off for applicable engine.
2. Block drive wheels.
3. Set parking brake.
4. DO NOT apply brake pedal.
5. Cycle ignition from OFF to ON.
6. Apply and hold brake pedal for the duration of the procedure.
7. Start and idle engine.
8. Turn the air conditioning (A/C) OFF.
9. The vehicle must remain in Park or Neutral.

10. IMPORTANT:
- The engine should not accelerate beyond the calibrated fuel cut-off RPM value noted in step 3.1. Release the throttle immediately if the value is exceeded.
- While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

Accelerate to wide open throttle (WOT) and release when the fuel cut-off occurs.

4. The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this Ignition. If the scan tool indicates that DTC P0315 ran and passed, the CKP variation learn procedure is complete. If the scan tool indicates DTC P0315 failed or did not run, refer to DTC P0315. If any other DTCs set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle for the applicable DTC.
5. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully in order to store the CKP system variation values in the ECM memory.

If possible, let me know if that takes care of the issue.

Take care,
Joe
