When I put the key in the ignition and turn it to "start", for about three to five seconds it does not make any noises, but the dash lights do turn on. After the three to five seconds the car starts and runs normal. I am assuming it is an ignition switch problem, but I do not want to replace a part that does not need to be replaced.

Best way to check this is to remove the trim from the steering column and locate the ignition switch and check with a test light that the ignition switch is actually switching as soon as you turn the key, there will be a constant power, and acc, run and start on the switch. Check each function for power while turning the key. Let me know what you find.
