All gears displayed as engaged on dash. We changed the transmission out like a year and a half ago and it just did this last night out of the blue. Any ideas? I need this car to last just a bit longer.

Hi, Jason.

Have you done the basics such as checking the fluid for condition? Also, can you tell me if the check engine light is staying on when driving?

If it is, then you really should have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Usually a hard shift is the result of a line pressure issue within the transmission. That should show up as a code.

As far as checking the fluid level, it can't be done because of the positioning of the transmission itself. The fluid level can only be checked when the fluid has been drained completely and then filled again. However, if you remove the fill plug very slowly (not the entire way) allow a small amount of fluid to drip onto a white tissue so you can at least see the condition. See pic 1

Let me know.

Joe

That clunking was happening in my Jetta and I ended up meeting somebody that was a Volvo Enthusiast and he showed me that same plug that you're talking about to see the condition of the fluid, but he also showed me how to put more in there and it just lubricated it. I guess apparently was very low because my particular model Jetta there was no dipstick or anything to be able to find out how much was in there or not in there. Mine was like a real thick grease that you put in it and he showed me how to use this hand pump to push the grease up into it. Ran smooth as silk after that never had a problem again I love that Jetta I sure miss it.
