Engine Performance problem
2000 Other Hyundai Models Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Manual 320000 miles

Sometimes when driving (50-55mph) lots of white smoke pours from the exhaust and the check engine light comes on and the car stutters, after a short while it clears and I can carry on whith my journey. I've noticed that oil then seeps over the engine under the air filter housing and also has blown into the air filter. Any ideas? This dosen't happen all the time, I could drive it for a few days and nothing!

Are you overheating? White smoke is an indication of coolant being burn in the combusion chamber. If so get it block and pressure tested.

Had work done at Hyundai main dealer. It is a fairly common fault in older Amicas' and atoz cars. The oil filler cap is a high point in the engine and therfore cools a bit too quickly and causes condensation which in turns creates a browny sludge inside the cap and in rocker cover. This in turn gets into the engine and in bad cases (mine) causes blockages in pipes which in turn causes a build up in pressure in crankshaft that causes the oil to be forced upwards into air filter system. In my case the breather pipe was blocked and they flushed the engine and replaced the oil and filters and advised to keep my oil level between med an just below high. So if this occured again the pressure would not get as high as to blow.

The only way to have that problem is you are not properly warming up your vehicle-start and go -condensation/moisture turns to water and builds up in the crankcase dillutes the oil ends up milkshake color-
