How to get Catalyst ready for smog check?

Due to the pandemic, we didn't drive the car that much. My car battery got replaced 2 times since. I took it for smog and all the test results were good except it's 'Not Ready'. I've driven this car close to 500 miles with all the tricks I found online with no success. I've got all ready except the Catalyst. The car runs very good for its age and mileage. Any secrets to share or products/parts to try? I've spent a lot of time and a small fortune on this car already.

Hi,

Is the catalytic converter the only system that isn't ready? I ask because clearing the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and resetting the emission monitor information or resetting the keep alive memory (KAM) causes the non-continuous monitors to change to a "NO" status. If all emissions are not ready, any of these can cause it.

If that isn't the case and the only one causing an issue is the catalyst, take a look through the directions below. I highlighted the section specific to catalyst readiness.

I have 8 items in the I/M readiness. The only item not ready is the Catalyst. My O2 sensor and even the EVAP are ready. Usually EVAP is the very last one to be ready but in California it does NOT matter to pass the smog test anyway. I'm sure I've covered those Ford drive cycles within the 400+ miles that I've driven. I even tried the 3000+ RPM for 5+ minutes in my drive way many times with no success(cold car warmed up with defog/AC on). The smog mechanic told me to replace the battery(which I did for the 3rd time), change O2 sensors and spark plugs, and replace the battery cables(good connections for +ve and good ground). And he also recommends Cataclean. I bought a set(4) of O2 sensors already. But I found out it's almost impossible to change out the upstream ones due to the odd location and space (Ford engineering sucks). Even the downstream passenger side, I still have to figure out how to disconnect the connector. I looked at my 2 original downstream sensors and they looked normal (O2 I/M ready and smog test results good). I'm not sure if changing out or cleaning the downstream sensors will do any good or it's just a waste of time. Another thing is this car drains the battery pretty fast and my car is all stock with no alarms. If I don't drive it for a month, chances are I'll have to charge it up to 12.6+ volts again to get it started and I may lose all the data in the PMLiVE been working on this car for several months now trying to get it ready and I'm getting very frustrated. Any new ideas may help. Thank you.

Hi,

If you have followed the drive cycle indicated, chances are something is failing but not setting a code.

In this case, you will need to find someone that can perform mode 6 testing. Mode 6 is basically defined as the test results and other components/system monitoring. The vehicle automatically runs self-tests on different systems and components to ensure proper operation. The easiest way I can describe it is this. Using a scan tool, a tech should be able to hook up and basically ask the PCM for the results of specific systems. In this case, the catalyst readiness.

Other than having that done, the only option I have is the drive cycle I provided.
