Hello,
First off this is a great web site, I will add a direct link to it on my site. Ok so here is my problem, I just got a 1985 Honda Prelude, it's the 2.0 Si, the engine has 250k on it no check engine light comes on at any point while driving it, when the car is started it runs very "hard" (shaking) almost as if the idle is off, If I get out of the car and pull the throttle back with my hand it stops shaking & sounds normal until the gas in engaged again and while driving until around 20 mph it is slow to respond and shakes terribly after that runs ok until back down to around 1750 rpms then shakes again, it doesn't like reverse either it makes a high squeek but works, although if I turn the wheel to far to the side it stalls. The car doesn't overheat but a strange smell occurs if driven more then 30 minutes. The person who sold me the car was knowledgeable about cars and said it wasn't worth his time and pointed to a black box in the top left corner of the car with 9 hoses connecting to it, he said it had something to do with a solenoid but only diagram I can find online refers to this as the control box. However he speaks very terrible english. The car has a new radiator, water pump, wires, and fuse box, he said he couldn't locate the box, I was able to find it online, however I don't trust the guy's knowledge. The odd thing is the car starts right up every time and mostly doesn't die, although it makes some strange noises, I do not want to drive the car because I do not want to crack the block. I bought the car because I thought it would be easy to find the part he said it needed, but now I'm not sure if that's really what it needs. Thank you ahead of time for any responses I receive.

You don't trust his knowledge but you based the purchase on what he said. Past that and on to fixing it.

When it runs roughly, I would have an extra plug available and check each wire to be sure that all of them are firing and supplying the need spark. You may have one bad plug, cracked, etc or a bad plug wire even though you said they had been replaced. I say that as pulling on them can easily weaken them.

It also sounds as though the linkage or cable for the carb in sticking. Get that resolved.
